NCAA Needs To Change The BCS
by admin ~ January 4th, 2012Are you as frustrated as I am regarding the current situation in college football? I don’t know that Oklahoma State or Stanford would have been a better choice in the BCS Championship game but they had one loss just like an Alabama team that did get the opportunity. Because of that opportunity, the Alabama Crimson Tide were crowned 2011 NCAA National Champions of College Football.
According to BCSfootball.org the goal for the BCS is the following:
The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a five-game showcase of college football. It is designed to ensure that the two top-rated teams in the country meet in the national championship game, and to create exciting and competitive matchups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other bowl games.
This is where the BCS is flawed. It should NOT be designed to “ensure that the two top-rated teams in the country meet in the national championship game”, but the goal should be to ensure the BEST two teams in the nation meet in the national championship game. Every other NCAA sport has a tournament format at the end of the season to determine the National Champion and college football should be no different. There are less games played during the football season than their are in basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball and many other sports, yet we can’t determine a national champion with a four or eight team tournament structure.
I could continue this on further but you can find more information regarding the BCS on this site and I will get straight to the point. I have built this site as way to share your voice with the BCS governance which includes the Presidential Oversight Committee, Conference Commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic Director, the AD Advisory Group and BCS Executive Director, Bill Hancock. By filling out the form with your Name and Email address, an email will be sent to all members of the BCS governance expressing your concerns for the current format.
